Animal Collective - Taste
I’ve been listening to this song a lot recently. It’s sort of like cLOUDDEAD mixed with The Beach Boys in the best possible way. Also, listening to it with headphones is a killer.
Explosions in the Sky - A Song for Our Fathers
I really love the drums in this song. I find that with most instrumental bands the drums are allowed to shine. Explosions in the Sky and Pelican are good examples of that.
Emiliana Torrini - Birds
Tremendously tremendous.
Slum Village - Fall In Love
Dilla be praised.
Onyx - Last Dayz
I can’t believe I had never heard of Onyx until recently. 90s Hip-Hop just can’t be touched. Do yourself a favor and pick up All We Got Iz Us. It’s a hardcore Hip-Hop classic.
J Dilla - Let’s Take It Back
A perfect song. It gives off a great warmth, and triggers a theme of reminiscence with the Tribe reference. It’s a spacey, minimal, Hip-Hop dreamscape, and I love it.
A Tribe Called Quest - Check The Rhime
Last week my listening was mostly centered around early 90s Hip-Hop. I must have listened to Tribe’s The Low End Theory (1991) about ten times. I also listened to a lot of Big L, Brand Nubian, Nas, and others.
Teebee - Let Go
Last week I got really into electronic stuff. Previously I was mostly into Burial, The Field, Boxcutter, Jerry Schroeder, Larvae, Boards of Canada, Zomby, and Aphex Twin. I discovered a lot of new artists last week, and I’m glad I finally expanded my electronic library. Some notable finds are Telefon Tel Aviv, Apparat, Kangding Ray, Jacaszek, Tycho, Commix, and Teebee.
I found out about Teebee while reading a Burial interview. He cited “Let Go” as an “underground and moody” song with vocals. This Teebee tune is super addictive, and has a really cool earworm inducing “riff”. It also further proves that Burial has incredible taste.
Sorry about all the name drops. I got a bit carried away.
